Autonomic Nervous System
The Foundation of Heartbeat Analysis
- The autonomic nervous system (ANS) is the human brain’s most elementary survival system, its two branches regulating arousal throughout the body.
- The sympathetic nervous system (SNS) stimulates the body and brain to act (movement, fight, flight).
- The parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) regulates basic body functions like digestion, wound healing, sleep and dream cycles (rest/digest, slow down, recover, sleep).
- When we are at our best, these two systems work closely together to keep us in an optimal state of engagement with our environment and with ourselves.
